Music & Arts Life Skills Program
Through our continued partnership with Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation, Ryan's Rays will be funding a Music and Arts Life Skills Program for children and youth at the Ron Joyce Children's Health Centre - part of McMaster Children's Hospital - for the next three years.
Music and Arts Life Skills promotes self-expression, movement, participation and group work. Through participation in these programs, children improve communication, memory and recall skills, socialization and collaboration, regulating emotions and self-esteem, creativity, and purposeful movement. A research-based practice, there are many inherent benefits with music and art therapy including boosting emotional, cognitive, and physical health. Funding will provide music and art experts and the necessary instruments and art supplies for the following initiatives:
ROCK BAND WITH MELODY MINDS
In partnership with Melody Minds, an inclusive, age-appropriate music and interactive media workshop is offered to provide Rock Band, an 8-week (run twice annually) music and multimedia program that focuses on creative expression, catharsis and is engaging and fun for anyone, regardless of their experience or ability level.
AUGMENTATIVE AND ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION MUSIC WITH MELODY
Music Therapy uses song and instruments to engage individuals of various ages, abilities, and musical backgrounds to accomplish individualized healthcare, educational and communication goals. Music is a natural way for young people to express their emotions when they are unable to verbalize their feelings, fears or concerns.
VISUAL ARTS
Small Art Therapy group sessions will focus on emotional regulation and expression, mindfulness and relaxation techniques, as well as art skill development. Art Therapy also provides opportunities to practice and strengthen fine motor skills and musculature.- Impact
